Utter Command automatically loads when you load NaturallySpeaking. When Utter Command is loaded you'll see the red and black Utter Command icon in the tray at the bottom right of the screen. 1. THE UTTER COMMAND MENU The UC menu lists all the parts of Utter Command, including pdf files of UC manual chapters, speech applets like Rulers and UC List, on-screen command guides, and key website help pages including Frequently Asked Questions and the UC Exchange Wiki. Say "UC Menu" or right-click on the Utter Command tray icon to open UC menu Say "Window Close" to close UC menu Say "UC" plus the first one or two words of a menu item to call up an item directly, e.g. "UC Getting Started" or "UC Intro" call up PDF chapters of the documentation; "UC Top General" calls up the Top general on-screen guide 2. OPTIMIZING NATURALLYSPEAKING and UTTER COMMAND First off, turn to the Intro section of the manual or say “UC Intro” to bring up the pdf and take a look at section 2. This section contains instructions for optimizing your computer for speech. Follow the instructions to make the vocabulary adjustment in 2.1. And if you intend to use Firefox (recommended), follow the instructions in 2.3.2 to download the mouseless browsing Firefox add-on. At some point make sure to take a look at the other optimization suggestions in Intro 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3. Going through the optimization instructions will also give you a feel for controlling your computer by speech. 3. GETTING STARTED WITH UTTER COMMAND Documentation: The fastest way to get started using Utter Command is to read "UC Getting Started" and go from there. - to call up the on-screen version say "UC Getting Started" If you don't have the printed documentation, you might also want to print off these sections of the manual: “UC Common Commands” - two-page reference lists common commands “UC Full” - full reference lists every UC command along with a brief explanation “UC Contents” - table of contents tells you what to say to call up any section of the manual “UC Task Tours” - 36 tours take you through many practical tasks, including - sending email - cutting and pasting from the Internet - controlling your music player - accessing any file, folder or Web site using a single speech command - quickly navigating through documents using keywords - quickly carrying out multiple cut and paste steps using the UC Clipboard files - efficiently using programs like Word, Writer, Excel and PowerPoint (Basic commands for navigating documents: "Screen Down", "Screen Up", "Find Page 1-100", "Control 1" to make a page actual size, "Window Close" to close a file.) 4. A WORD ABOUT NATURALLYSPEAKING COMMANDS AND UTTER COMMAND COMMANDS In general, when there's an overlap, you're free to use NaturallySpeaking or Utter Command commands. There's one set of commands where you'll have to choose, however. (We've changed these commands to fit the UC command structure, to remove the "That" ambiguity, and prevent commands from tripping accidentally. For more information see UC Intro table 1.2a -- say "UC Intro 1 Point 2"). Here are the two forms of these commands: UC: Words = NS: select UC: Words Copy/Cut/Delete = NS: copy/cut/delete UC: Words Bold/Italic/Underline = NS: bold/italicize/underline UC: Go Before = NS: insert before UC: Go After = NS: insert after UC: Nope = NS: correct that UC: Nope = NS: correct UC: Add Caps = NS: cap that UC: Add All Caps = NS: all caps that UC: Add No Caps = NS: no caps that You can choose either wording. The UC wording is installed by default. You might want to change back either temporarily or permanently if you are used to the NatSpeak commands or if you use custom macros that call the NatSpeak wording. To CHANGE BACK to NatSpeak wording a. Go to UC menu/Options or say "UC Options" b. Uncheck "UC wording for Natspeak select-any-words..." Note: If you train a new NaturallySpeaking user and want to use the UC wordings, you must reinstall UC so it can adjust the commands for your new user. 5. RESOURCES and FEEDBACK There are many RESOURCES at the Redstart Systems Web site: Say "Redstart Systems Site" to call up the Redstart site Say "UC Videos Site" to call up the UC Learning Videos page Say "UC Frequently Site" to call up the UC Frequently Asked Questions Page Say "UC Exchange Site" to call up the UC Exchange Wiki -- the Wiki includes strategy pages for applying Utter Command to different programs. TROUBLESHOOTING See "UC Appendices 2" and "UC Appendices 3" for troubleshooting and workaround tips. See "UC Intro 2" for instructions that will guide you through optimizing your system for speech. TROUBLE INSTALLING If you have problems installing please follow this troubleshooting sequence -- make sure to follow the entire sequence in order from A through J: A. UC for NaturallySpeaking Pro requires NaturallySpeaking Pro. Make sure NaturallySpeaking Pro is installed on your machine. B. Install UC by clicking on the Utter Command ".msi" file you downloaded (or inserting the Utter Command CD and clicking the Utter Command ".msi" file on the CD) and following the on-screen instructions. C. If you have problems during the install process => proceed to step D below to install UC manually. - If the installation process is successful make sure NaturallySpeaking Pro is running, click the NaturallySpeaking icon to turn the microphone on, and try out the following UC commands: "WordPad Open" (opens the program WordPad) testing testing testing ("testing testing testing" should appear on the WordPad document) First Word (selects the first word of the line) "Line Delete" (deletes the line you just dictated) "WordPad Close · No" (closes WordPad without saving the file) "UC Menu" (opens the UC Menu -- repeat if necessary) "1 Escape" (closes menu) "Rulers Open" (puts Rulers around your screen) "Rulers Close" (removes the Rulers) If these commands work you're done. UC is installed properly. If none of these commands work, UC might not be properly installed => proceed to step D below to install UC manually. (The first thing the UC installation program does is copy files to the Utter Command directory. Then it moves some of these files to other directories. If you install UC, but cannot get the UC commands to work, it's likely that the installation program could not find the correct directories for these files. This can happen when you install a higher version of NatSpeak, but then switch back to a previous version. In this case, stray directories from the higher version may fool the UC installation program. Steps D through I allow you to tell UC where the correct directories are.) D. Open a DOS window (click Start to open the start menu, click Run to open the run dialog box, type "Cmd" in the "Open" text field, then hit Enter) E. Type "cd" followed by the UC directory address If you installed UC in the default directory type the following: cd C:\Program Files\Redstart Systems\Utter Command 1.5 (copy and paste instructions: right-click the menu bar at the top of the DOS window, click Edit/Paste) F. Hit the Enter key G. Type or paste (XP): UCinit "C:\Program Files\Redstart Systems\Utter Command 1.5\" "C:\Shared Documents\UC Files\" -Install -Manual or type or paste (Vista): UCinit "C:\Program Files\Redstart Systems\Utter Command 1.5\" "C:\Users\Public\Documents\UC Files\" -Install -Manual The first address (surrounded by quotes above) should be the folder that contains the UC files and the second address (surrounded by quotes above) should be the folder where you want to put the UC files that can be changed by the user. The above line contains the default addresses. H. Hit the Enter key I. Follow the directions on the next few screens You'll be prompted to find NatSpeak.exe File You'll be prompted to find the enx\dvcu\general Folder You'll be prompted to find the NaturallySpeaking Users Folder J. Repeat step C. If these commands work -- you're done. UC is installed properly. If you're still having trouble => please report what is happening to info@redstartsystems.com
